Dr Bill Harding

Dr Bill Harding has post-graduate qualifications in freshwater biology, microbiology and chemistry from Rhodes University and the University of Cape Town. He additionally has a Masters degree in Environmental Law from the UCT School of Law. With his 36 years of applied practical experience he offers one of the widest suites of ecology-based inter-disciplinary understanding and specialization currently available in South Africa. Bill, co-owner of the highly successful DH Environmental Consulting, a company that he and his wife established in 1995, was previously also a co-owner and senior consultant with Southern Waters Ecological Research and Consulting. Prior thereto he was the Senior Hydrobiologist for the City of Cape Town, and also served as the Senior Microbiologist for the Cape Town Metropole for nine years. As a chemist Bill established the first dedicated analytical facility for blue-green algal toxins in Africa, and practiced as a chemist/microbiologist in the wine industry for a period of 8 years where he specialized in fermentation technology and the amino acid chemistry of flavonoid compounds in wine.

Bill is the immediate past Chairperson of the Southern African Institute of Ecologists and Environmental Scientists (SAIEES), and previously served for a continuous six-year period on the Executive Committee of the Southern African Society of Aquatic Scientists (SASAQS). He served on the ministerial council of SACNASP (South African Council for Natural Science Professions) and holds the USA accreditation of Certified Lake Manager (CLM) - the only non-North American to have been awarded this certification. He is also the Director for Africa of International Environmental Management Services (Ltd), a USA-based environmental information and skills transfer Not-For-Profit organization.

Bill is very active in both the water research and consulting fields. In recent years he has directed R10 million worth of research funding, developing in the process a series of key tools for water resource management.
